Sonny Boy

Living with small memories / language: Dutch

On the eve of his 37th birthday, Waldy Nods, the same age his father turned, is trying to sort out the memories of his parents. They have to come from far away and there are not many of them. At 14, Rika and Waldemar were torn from his life by World War II. As a boy, he was tossed back and forth between Dutch relatives where he never felt at home. As a man, he hopes to find his footing in the stories of his parents, Dutch and Surinamese. Why was he their sonny boy? What part of them is in him? Who does he really belong to?

The monologue 'Sonny Boy' brings Rika and Waldemar Nods from Annejet van der Zijl's magisterial novel back to life. Now through the eyes of their son. The son they never saw grow up and could not protect. The son who had to cope with the glare of their absence in a world where he was not always welcome.

Played by Tarikh Janssen ('The Bodyguard', 'Ik Wist het', 'Drijfvermogen' and 'Kamp van Koningsbrugge').

From the makers of 'Ma' and 'Nu Ik Je Zie'.
